You might be thinking—do I really need a greens (or reds) powder?

I’ll be honest: I’m usually the last person to recommend a supplement before you’ve nailed down the basics of your diet. But let’s face it—life gets busy. Even our best intentions don’t always lead to a daily serving of greens, reds, or anything that vaguely resembles a vegetable. And that’s where a smart powder can step in as a form of nutritional insurance. They are a safety net that help us stay on track and supplement our diets, not replace high-quality, nutritious food!

With so many options on the market, I wanted to cut through the hype and see which powders actually deliver. So, I tested three of today’s most talked-about formulas: Athletic Greens (AG1), Bloom, and IM8

There are hundreds of greens and reds powders on the market, all with different ingredients, formulations, and scientific claims. It’s no wonder most people feel overwhelmed when trying to pick one! Add in the endless marketing and social media hype, and it becomes even harder to separate fact from fiction. My goal is to cut through the noise and figure out which ones are actually worth your money.

As much as I’d love to play mad scientist and experiment with every greens powder on the market, I just don’t have the time! So, I narrowed my testing down to three of the most widely recognized and frequently recommended powders:

AG1 (Athletic Greens) – The industry staple. With massive influencer backing (think: Andrew Huberman, professional athletes), AG1 is often seen as the gold standard in greens powders.

Bloom – The viral TikTok favorite. Known for its fruity flavors and aesthetic packaging, Bloom has exploded in popularity, particularly among Gen Z.

IM8 – The science-backed newcomer. Co-founded by David Beckham and advisory board featuring top medical experts from NASA, Cedars-Sinai, and the Mayo Clinic, IM8 takes a research-driven approach.

These are the brands you're most likely to come across—whether from social media, online searches, or recommendations from friends.

The Ground Rules

To keep things as scientifically sound as possible, I followed strict criteria when selecting and evaluating each powder:

  • No “kitchen sink” formulas – If a supplement tried to do too much (think: protein-preworkout-greens hybrids), it got an automatic no. I wanted to test products that were truly focused on greens and reds for optimal nutrition.

  • Comprehensive formulations only – Single-ingredient supplements didn’t make the cut. I prioritized formulas that offered a well-rounded nutrient profile, backed by legitimate research.

  • Just plain water – No mixing these into fancy smoothie bowls to hide any unpleasant surprises. I wanted to get the 'real' taste of these products, without any other mixes.

The Testing Process

I wanted to make sure the testing process gave each supplement a fair evaluation. This is the testing process I used:

  • Each morning, I prepared and tested a different supplement in water. I wanted to see for myself how easy they were to prepare.

  • I tracked mixing behavior, dissolution time, and what it looked like right after mixing and 10 minutes later.

  • I tasted each supplement within the first 5 minutes of mixing and again 30 minutes later to see how the taste held up over time.

  • I measured my energy levels 5 times throughout the day - at 9am in the morning before taking the supplement, at noon, at 3pm, and 6pm, and at 9pm before bed.

  • I reviewed the ingredients, scientific claims, certifications, and research documents for each supplement.

  • I enlisted my brutally honest husband as a taste tester. If he wrinkled a nose, I took note. (Spoiler alert: he even gave a rare thumbs-up to one of these powders—keep reading!)

My Non-Negotiables in Greens and Reds Supplements

In a market flooded with “premium” promises, not all formulas are created equal. Celebrity endorsements can be fun—but it’s the PhD-backed advisory boards and legitimate research that matter more.

The Must-Have Checklist

  • Clinical dosing (no pixie dust)

  • Third-party testing (non-negotiable)

  • Bioavailable, research-supported ingredients

  • Transparent labeling (no hidden blends)

  • No synthetic fillers

  • Actually enjoyable taste (no “sweetened yard clippings”)

Taste is perhaps the biggest deal-breaker of them all. Because if you don’t like it, you won’t make a habit of drinking it. Making it an expensive waste of space in your pantry. But I’m happy to report that my top pick from a nutrition standpoint was also my taste panel’s favorite in terms of flavor!

Finally, I compared each formula’s price-per-serving (some brands are sneaky with their serving sizes) and assessed real-world bioavailability. Let’s jump into it, and feel free to leave any comments if you have tried any of these brands!

★ Why IM8 is My Top Pick

I did not expect this, but newcomer IM8 Daily Essentials + Hydration ($79) blew it out of the park and claimed the top spot on my list. Here’s why it checked all my boxes:

(1) Clinically Dosed Ingredients: One thing I really appreciate about IM8 is how upfront they are about what’s actually in it. No guessing games, no vague "proprietary blends"—just clear, research-backed dosages of key nutrients. It includes 100mg of CoQ10 (great for energy and heart health), 1000mg of MSM (amazing for joint support and recovery), and 900mg of vitamin C (because who doesn’t need an immunity boost?). Even minerals like magnesium, which so many of us don’t get enough of, are included at 65mg per serving. I go a bit deeper into the ingredients here in case you’re interested!

(2) Packed with Prebiotics, Probiotics and Postbiotics: IM8 is the only brand I’ve seen that has been able to pack this trio of very important biotics together. It contains 10b CFU of shelf-stable probiotics (no refrigeration needed) plus postbiotics - something the other contenders lack. For gut health nerds like me, this is game-changing. This balanced combination is very likely the reason my bloating has lessened, and my gut is feeling great!

How They Work Synergistically in a Powder Formulation

  1. Prebiotics Feed Probiotics: The prebiotics in the powder act as fuel for the probiotics, helping them survive, multiply, and colonize the gut more effectively.

  2. Probiotics Produce Postbiotics: As the probiotics consume the prebiotics, they produce postbiotics, which provide additional health benefits like reducing inflammation and supporting gut barrier function.

  3. Postbiotics Enhance the Ecosystem: Postbiotics create a healthier gut environment, making it easier for probiotics to thrive and for prebiotics to continue fueling the process.

  4. Immediate and Long-Term Benefits: The combination ensures both immediate benefits (from postbiotics) and long-term benefits (from a balanced microbiome supported by prebiotics and probiotics).

(3) Tastes Amazing: If you close your eyes, you can almost convince yourself that you’re drinking berry punch. It’s impressive to me they managed to achieve this taste without stevia (which AG1 and Bloom use), and instead rely on fermented sugarcane extract, to deliver that clean, natural sweetness without the artificial aftertaste.

★ What I Love

IM8 actually tastes and smells good. The berry and açai flavor is smooth, refreshing, and way more enjoyable than the usual “blended lawn clippings” situation. It dissolves easily, whether you’re mixing it with water, juice, or blending it into a smoothie. And while taste isn’t always my top priority, it definitely makes a difference if you’re committing to a daily habit. And yes, the taste panel agreed with me! My husband Matt (who is notoriously picky!) gave this powder a thumbs up. He even requested more the next day!

Beyond the flavor, I felt really great when drinking this as part of my morning routine! More energy, better focus throughout the day, and noticeably improved digestion. If you’re looking for an easy, science-backed way to support your gut, immunity, and overall health, IM8 is a fantastic daily ritual.

IM8 is co-founded by David Beckham, but he has an incredibly solid team of scientists creating the product, including Dr. Dawn Musallem, Integrative Oncologist from Mayo Clinic, Prof. Suzanne Devkota, Director of Microbiome from Cedars-Sinai, and even the Former Chief Scientist of NASA. Seeing this level of scientific backing from academia, medical professionals and with clinical trials and 3rd party testing for a supplement is rare, so I am confident the formulation is as optimized as it could be.

★ What Could Be Better

IM8 is packed with premium, clinically dosed ingredients, but that level of quality comes at a price—it’s on the higher end at $79 per month. That said, when I compared it to the cost of buying multiple separate supplements (probiotics, greens, antioxidants, etc.), it ended up being much cheaper than buying all the components separately!

It is also one of the thinnest powders, which can be good and bad. It mixed easily, but it also makes it a tad messier, and I often had to wipe off stray powder from my countertops.

Another thing to note: it’s only available online, and because it’s in high demand, it sometimes sells out. If you want to make it a daily habit, I’d recommend signing up for a subscription to avoid stock issues.

Ingredient Breakdown

When you become a dietitian, they make sure you know your way around an ingredient label. And IM8’s definitely impressed me! IM8 Daily Essentials + Hydration is packed with 92 premium ingredients carefully formulated to target eight key areas of health. Here’s a closer look at some of the standout components:

  • CoQ10 (100mg): Supports cellular energy production and heart health, with a clinical dose that’s 20% higher than most daily supplements.

  • MSM (1,000mg): Promotes joint health and muscle recovery, with an anti-inflammatory boost for active lifestyles.

  • Vitamin D3 (100% DV): Essential for bone health, immune function, and hormone regulation, a common deficiency in most diets.

  • B-Vitamins Complex (B6, B12, Folate – 150% DV): Provides sustained energy and supports brain health, with bioavailable methylated forms for optimal absorption.

  • Zinc (100% DV) and Magnesium (125% DV): Crucial for immune support, sleep quality, and muscle recovery, included in bioavailable forms.

  • Superfood and Adaptogen Blend: A powerful combination of green tea, açai, pomegranate, and sea moss offers antioxidant protection, helps reduce inflammation, and boosts metabolism.

  • Prebiotics, Probiotics, and Postbiotics: Includes clinically validated strains like Lactobacillus acidophilus and Bifidobacterium lactis, as well as Butyrate for gut comfort and nutrient absorption.

  • Electrolyte Hydration Blend: A mix of sodium, potassium, and magnesium ensures balanced hydration without added sugars or fillers.

One thing that impressed me: despite its nutrient density, each serving is remarkably efficient:

  • Low-calorie (perfect for fasting windows)

  • Minimal carbs

  • No artificial sweeteners

  • No fillers or synthetic additives

What's equally important is what's NOT in it - no proprietary blends hiding weak doses, no artificial preservatives, and no need for refrigeration thanks to their shelf-stable probiotic technology.

★ What I Love

It’s no wonder AG1 has been dominating the greens space for a decade: it’s an impressive product and there has been a lot of investment in making sure the experience (think the website and Welcome Kit) give you the best possible first impression.

So, AG1 has a lot going for it, and if you’re looking for a solid greens powder and don’t mind paying a premium, here’s what I liked.

First off, it’s a good all-in-one formula, combining greens, adaptogens, probiotics, and vitamins into a single scoop (however, not in clinically recommended doses, we will get into that!). It also includes spirulina, chlorella, and wheatgrass—all great sources of phytonutrients and antioxidants. It also includes prebiotics and probiotics for gut health, which is a plus, and I did see some improvement in my bloating and digestion after taking it in the morning!

Taste-wise, most greens powders taste like blended lawn clippings. AG1 has a smooth, slightly tropical flavor with a hint of vanilla and pineapple. It’s one of the more drinkable options out there (especially compared to the ultra-earthy formulas, but I personally didn’t enjoy it enough to see myself easily incorporating it into my daily routine.

★ What Could Be Better

There is a lot of hype around AG1 with endorsements from professional athletes, fitness coaches, and influencers like Andrew Huberman, which often leads to the question of how much of the premium price (US$99 per month) is worth it and how much of it is hype.

There are other cons that can’t be ignored. The vitamins and minerals are from synthetic versions rather than naturally derived or bioavailable forms. For example, the vitamin B12 is cyanocobalamin (less absorbable than methylcobalamin).

The biggest red flag for me is that AG1 hides its ingredient dosages behind proprietary blends. That means you don’t actually know how much of each nutrient you’re getting. They list all the ingredients, but the label doesn’t break down the exact amounts, making it impossible to assess if you’re getting clinically effective doses.

AG1 is still a very good greens powder—it’s convenient, doesn’t taste bad, and includes a mix of greens, probiotics, and adaptogens. But in my humble opinion, there are better options out there!

Bloom: The TikTok Favorite That’s More About Flavor Than Function

Bloom: The TikTok Favorite That’s More About Flavor Than Function

Bloom

Rated 4.1 / 5

Pro's:

Most variety of flavors

Focus on bloating

Vegan, gluten free, dairy-free

Reasonably priced

Available offline at major retailers

Contains probiotics and digestive enzymes

Con's:

Little ingredient transparency

Clumpy and doesn’t mix well

No vitamins or minerals listed

Not organic

Contains stevia, which some people dislike

If AG1 is the sleek, celebrity-backed option and IM8 is the powerhouse of clinical research, then Bloom is the fun, influencer-approved wellness pick—one that looks good on your kitchen counter but doesn’t quite deliver where it counts.

It’s hard to scroll through TikTok without seeing someone raving about Bloom’s greens powder. With its pastel packaging, fruity flavors, and an emphasis on “beating the bloat,” it’s won over a massive fanbase on social media. It’s also easily available in major retailers like Target and Amazon, making it one of the most accessible greens powders on the market.

But when I dug deeper into the ingredients, transparency, and effectiveness, Bloom started to feel more like a fun wellness drink than a serious nutritional supplement.

★ What I Love

One of the things I love most about Bloom is that it’s an easily accessible option due to being in major retailers like Target and Amazon.

Formula-wise, it stands out with it’s low-calorie content and a focus on pre-and probiotic enzymes designed to beat bloating. It has a well-rounded ingredient list with a variety of superfoods like barley grass, spirulina, and organic flaxseed.

If you’re a fan of a sweeter greens powder, then you will enjoy this formula! They have a variety of fruity flavors like Mango and Kiwi. I tried the Orange Passionfruit, but it was a bit too sweet for my liking. It’s also a more affordable option at just US$40 for 30 servings.

★ What Could Be Better

Bloom has its shortcomings, especially in the transparency department. First off, most greens powders clearly outline their vitamin and mineral content, but Bloom doesn’t. Without this information, it’s hard to tell how much actual nutrition you’re getting. And while Bloom does contain a wide variety of greens, the dosages aren’t listed—meaning there’s no way to know if you’re getting clinically effective amounts or just trace amounts for label appeal. From what I can see, the product has also not been third-party tested.

While the taste might appeal to some, it was a tad too sweet for me, and the powder was incredibly clumpy and annoying to mix. I noticed it still had clumps on the surface even after using an electric whisk.

All in all, it feels more like a wellness drink rather than a supplement, and it doesn’t compare to IM8’s research-backed formulation or AG1’s more established ingredient profile.

Why I Chose IM8

After extensive testing of premium supplements, I’m so happy that I found one that checked all my boxes. First, IM8 has a wide range of high-quality, nutritious ingredients in bioavailable forms and in clinically recommended doses. Second, it supports a wide range of health benefits, from energy to digestion to immunity. And third, it actually tastes delicious and is enjoyable to drink – which makes it much easier to make a habit of drinking daily!

At $79, IM8 isn't the cheapest option out there and it still sits firmly in the premium category. But when you consider that it's replacing what would normally be a $200+ monthly supplement stack (I did the math), while providing higher doses of key nutrients than competitors like AG1 ($99), the value becomes clear. Plus, you're getting what might be the most sophisticated supplement formulation currently on the market - backed by a scientific advisory board that reads like a who's who of medical research.

I’ve also been already introducing it to my clients, which I would not be doing if I didn’t believe in the value of this supplement on optimal health and longevity! They are absolutely loving it so far. The feedback I’ve received is incredible – they are no longer needing afternoon naps, their bowels movements are now regular, and their joints are even feeling so much better.

Remember, supplements don’t replace whole foods and a balanced diet, but if you’re looking to always perform at your best, IM8 will ensure you get everything your body needs and more.
